Steamboat Springs Fly-fishing

It's not bad living in a place where you can mix in some fly-fishing and skiing dual sport days. Here are a couple or more pictures of my father in-law's recent fishing exploits in the Yampa River. These fish are big enough that even Ted didn't feel the need to extend his arms as far as possible towards the camera to make them look bigger. If it makes you feel any better I was working while Ted caught all of these fish.

If you want to get a few pointers from Ted on how to live so well give me a call. We can point you to some fantastic fly-fishing in the Steamboat Springs area, great guides and give you pointers to get on prime private water. I also have some great articles about fly-fishing around Steamboat if you want to see how good the fishing around here really is. I wouldn't ask if you don't want to become even more pre-occupied with getting back to Steamboat soon. Double haul back to the Steamboat Springs blog main page for more.

Welcome to my Steamboat Blog

I feel fortunate to have this Steamboat Springs Blog featured in the Sunday Steamboat Pilot with the tagline A Quick trip to Steamboat . Matt Stensland, the Pilot's business reporter has been reading this blog for a while now was nice enough to compliment me on it and write a nice story. It was cool to get to meet Matt since I have enjoyed his articles over time. Thank you Matt.

If you are not familiar with what a blog is it is short for web log and is a chronological set of stories or links that someone publishes on the web. Matt and I had an interesting talk about blogs and Steamboat in general. I don't have the journalistic standards to adhere to like a newspaper so I can write about rumors that have some credence or things that are fact but not yet widely known. I can also write about anything that I think is fun and feature my kids at will.

I feel very lucky to have a great family and live here in Steamboat so I like to share that with others. I have only myself and the readers of this blog to reckon with but I try to hold myself to a high standard in providing items of interest and and my insights into things people that love Steamboat care about. Keep reading below, I hope that you enjoy the result.

There's Something about Steamboat

It happens to me several times a week, it is usually something simple but every time it happens I feel lucky that we live in Steamboat. I'm not talking about powder days, epic bike rides, pulling a particularly big fish out of the river or any of the countless obvious reasons that we are so fortunate to call Steamboat home. I am talking about the subtle things you notice as part of daily life as a Steamboat Local like:
- how amazingly nice the people that live in or visit Steamboat Springs are
- how your kids are safe here and how many people haven't had a key to their house for years
- what an unreal place it is for kids and how hard the community works to make it that way
- how many parades we have that shut down main street
- how the whole town comes downtown for Halloween and you see everyone you know in one night
- going skiing, biking etc without planning in advance
- going skiing alone and only making 1-2 runs alone
- how easy it is to find someone to get outdoor and play any time of the day/week
- how truly generous people are that call Steamboat home all year or just a week
- how all four seasons overlap here
- how snow storms come in waves, how it warms up before the big storms, how the really big powder days come when snow forecast is 30% chance of trace to 3 inches, the way the snow sticks to the aspens and no matter how familiar any of this seems ... how beautiful and unpredictable it really is, just like a great woman. In my case Wendy.
- how many beautiful things you notice if you just slow down a little or go someplace new
- how almost any local could fill a book with a list like this and I couldn't limit myself to just a few no matter how hard I tried.

Winter Fly-fishing in Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Winter fly-fishingSteamboat Springs Winter fly-fishingSteamboat Winter fly-fishingHere are some pictures of the fish my father in-law Ted caught today in the Yampa River near Steamboat Springs. There was so much snow they had to snowshoe in to the river and anytime they went on-shore or they were in waist deep. As you can see he could have used some help lifting these hawgs. It was a great day on the river and he couldn't stop commenting about how much better the fly-fishing is here in Steamboat than on his special trip to Patagonia to fly-fish a few weeks ago.

I think that some of these fish are strays from Marabou Ranch or they have been eating at Café Diva every night and then going to Chocolate Soup for a second desert. Cast back to the Steamboat Springs blog main page for more.

Steamboat has gotten 300 inches so far this season

Over 100 inches of Champagne Powder over the last seven days has put us back into a solid season for snow. I have had a strong case of Deja Vu around town and up on the mountain over the last week as my mind keeps taking me back to last year's epic season. Our base is now over 80 inches, the best in the state within the major resorts. Vail is just over 50 inches. Several weather forecasters said in the fall we were likely to have a nice fall then a slower mid-season with strong precipitation in the spring. I guess they knew what they were talking about. March is generally a great month for snow so I am excited to see how much of the good stuff comes our way. Wax your powder skis and get out here soon... Intrawest completes Steamboat Purchase Early!

It's Official! ASC didn’t back out this time and Intrawest is the new owner of the Steamboat Ski area. I’m sure that Intrawest won’t be perfect but odds are Steamboat will soon be an even better place to ski. Steamboat is one of the top brand names in skiing and Intrawest considers Steamboat to be a marquee resort in their portfolio. They have the cash to invest and the smarts to really bring up the level of experience on the mountain. It will be very interesting to hear more detailed announcements over the next few months with details on their plans for Steamboat and I’ll pass those on as appropriate. For more background scan back in time on my Steamboat Springs blog main page for more.

A lift or two, some on mountain improvements, and an overall step up in service will go a long way. Most importantly I hope that they stick to their commitment to not change the things that make Steamboat special. BTW We have gotten 6 feet of snow in the last 6 days and more is falling now. It was a little thin earlier this year so I think this calls for another visit to Steamboat soon. You deserve some epic powder days, don’t you?

I'll have more thoughts and details soon so check back. I'll post links to the best articles published on the sale. If you want to understand more about what is happening in Steamboat Real Estate feel free to give me a call at 970-819-6930.
