It's snowing!!!! We are getting a beautiful snow tonight composed of large flakes floating down slowly. It's enough to warm any skier's heart. Earlier today it was sunny and nice. All of a sudden I noticed something in the air out my office window, walked outside and lo and behold it was snow. By the time I walked back in it was over. Hopefully we will see a lot more of the white stuff over the next few weeks. There is only 19 days 1 1/2 hours left until ski season here in Steamboat.
Let it Snow ^3

Compared to other resorts in Colorado. Steamboat doesn't seem to be getting a lot of snow. Is it still a bit early to be worrying about the lack of snow for this time of year??
I am starting to get worried too. In past years would one already expect to see a nice accumulation of snow on the ground. Several Colorado resorts are planning to open this Friday. It seems that Steamboat needs a lot of snow quickly to be ready to open in just 2-weeks.
The front range resorts typically open sooner, it would be a bad sign for everyone if they didn't so that is not a warning sign in my eyes. I wish I could tell you what will happen but I do know a few things. It has been very wet this summer and fall compared to any of the last five years and we continue to get large amounts of precipitation. It just hasn't been cold enough quite yet to stay in quanity. Steamboat is at a lower elevation which keeps our temperatures milder and allows more consistent snows during the colder parts of the season. Some of our best years have been when it starts just before and during Thanksgiving. There are quite a few locals that think it is a bad sign when it snows too early because theythink it seems to taper off later. What will happen is anyone's guess but I haven't seen anything that scares me yet. I'm still trying ot decide which new powder skis to get if that gives you any clue what I think.
Keep thinking snow!
If there were a timescale to begin to worry when would it be??
I guess that depends when you are coming. I'm still optimistic for Thanksgiving since it has been so wet and the top of the moutain has been holding snow even though it has been in hte 50's this week. It is snowing right now in town so do your snow dance. Have a great weekend
